Can I get from London Stansted Airport to Brighton by train

... I see that travel by coach is less expensive... but it's less comfortable too?

There's no direct trains from Stansted to Brighton (they're on opposite sides of London). You can buy a ticket to Brighton, however, I'd take the Coach to Gatwick and then catch the train from Gatwick. If you have luggage then taking it on the Underground will be extremely difficult as quite a lot of the underground is just stairs with no escalator or lifts option whereas at Stansted and Gatwick luggage is expected.
