"Throughout history, women have been regarded as being more vain than men.  They have often gone through bizarre, painful, and even deadly measures in order to make themselves more appealing.  From the ancient Chinese rituals of feet-binding, to the Victorian-era trend of applying makeup made with toxic metals, history is full of vain women who have jeopardized their well-being for the sake of beauty.

While there are millions of vain women in the world today, there are plenty of men giving them a run for their money.  While tales are far and few of men who suffered lead poisoning or crippled and deformed appendages for beauty's sake, there is however one enduring tale which exemplifies just how vain men are capable of being.  This tale, of course, is the one of Narcissus, the mythological Greek hero who was so enamored with his appearance that he could't stop staring at the reflection of himself in the water.  Eventually he died of starvation.

Though only a myth, there are indeed men in today's world who have a level of vanity almost as high as that of Narcissus.  They spend a good amount of time grooming and plucking and staring at their own reflection in the mirror, before heading to the gym and performing endless exercises and crunches just for the pleasure of being able to show off their abs.

Are men are vain as women?  Absolutely.  Ask any woman why she spends hours at the gym, and you're likely to hear some excuse that deals with health or something else equally as practical.  Men, on the other hand, tend to be in it much more for the sake of appearance.  Today's man is just as likely to purchase a facial scrub, moisturizing cream, and haircare products as their women counterparts.

This evidence is supported by the beauty industry, which has discovered that every year men are the fastest-growing segment of the spa and salon industry.  From highlights to manicures to facials and even full-body waxing, men are flocking to salons and spas the same way men would flock to boxing matches and the horse track a mere generation or two ago.

Men are indeed more vain than they have ever been, but are they as vain as women?  I suppose we will just have to keep our eye on the statistics compiled by the beauty industry, for the day when male clients in these traditionally female environments become the majority. "
